The scheduled passenger cruise currently allows roughly 40 minutes on the island, including a guided visit to its early Christian site. Historic features include St Patrick’s Church, the Church of the Saints and Lugna’s Stone.

This makes the experience fundamentally different from the Galway cruise. You are not simply looking at the shoreline from a boat. The island landing becomes part of the trip.

What to check: current 2026 scheduled island cruises run from June through September. Confirm which pier you are boarding from and allow enough time to reach Cong or Lisloughrey before departure.

Best Short Cong Option: One-Hour History Cruise

Current morning history cruises operate from Ashford Castle and nearby Lisloughrey Pier and last approximately one hour.

Best Adventure: Inchagoill RIB Safari

Best for: small groups, active travelers and visitors who want a faster way to explore more of the lake.

A separate local operator uses a licensed RIB from the Cong side for approximately two-hour Inchagoill trips and longer safaris.

The Inchagoill version combines the faster boat ride with an island stop of around one hour, allowing time to explore the ruins and wooded landscape before travelling back through additional bays and islands.

Longer half-day Maam Valley safaris push farther into Lough Corrib and emphasize islands, mountain views and the geography of the northern lake.

What to check: departure pier, current schedule, weather, passenger restrictions and whether you prefer a faster small boat or the slower traditional passenger cruise.

Best Full Lake Day: Oughterard, Inchagoill and Cong

Best for: slow travelers and visitors who want the boat journey to dominate the day.

The current summer Oughterard route is very different from the shorter cruises. It leaves Oughterard around midday, crosses toward Inchagoill, continues to the Cong and Ashford Castle side and returns later in the day.

The trip includes an Inchagoill visit and time around Cong or the Ashford Castle grounds before the return sailing.

Because the complete experience takes roughly six hours, this is closer to a lake day trip than a conventional sightseeing cruise.

What to check: the route operates only on selected summer days. Check the exact weekday and return time rather than assuming it sails daily.

Best Active Choice: Kayaking on Lough Corrib

Best for: active travelers, families with older children and visitors who want to explore closer to shore.

Kayaking providers operate from several parts of the lake, including Cornamona and other western and northern access points.

Guided outings can use sheltered shoreline, creeks, reed beds and small islands, with the exact route adjusted for wind, water conditions and the group’s ability.

The advantage over a passenger cruise is scale. You move slowly through places that larger sightseeing boats do not use and experience the lake almost at water level.

What to check: meeting point, minimum age, swimming requirements, equipment, weather policy and whether the activity includes an island landing.

Best Specialist Trip: Guided Fishing

Best for: anglers and travelers who want a private lake experience rather than sightseeing commentary.

Check the Departure Point First

Woodquay, Ashford Castle, Lisloughrey and Oughterard are not interchangeable piers. A tour that looks perfect can become impractical if you discover too late that it starts on the opposite side of the lake.

Know Whether the Boat Lands

The Galway sightseeing cruise remains onboard throughout. The summer Inchagoill cruises and RIB safari include an island landing. Check this before choosing if walking around the historic island is important to you.

Allow for Irish Weather

Rain does not automatically ruin a cruise, especially on boats with covered or heated seating. Wind and lake conditions matter more for RIBs, kayaks and other small craft.
